Portrait of a Canadian Mountie signed & dated 1940

We initially believed this portrait to be of a Belgium military officer due to the canvas marked Belgium but of course canvases can travel. However, we received the following note from a gentlemen who kindly took the time to enligthen us.

“He’s from much further West, in Canada. This guy’s wearing the uniform of the North West Mounted Police, the precursor to The RCMP, The Mounties. Why it’s dated 1940 though, I don’t know, as the NWMP had become the RCMP about ten years earlier. Still, great bit of Canadian history”

Signed H. I. Noakes and dated 1940.

We love the mounties facial no nonsense expression. A steely character indeed.

Good condition with some scuffs to the painted wooden frame.

Dimensions: H:57cm W:47cm D:3cm
