ANTIQUE WORKBENCH

Code: I22

A truly stunning wooden workbench.

This piece was bought from an elderly gentleman who advised that it belonged to his late father who passed away in his 80s. Due to its age and having been, no doubt, put through the mill as one would expect for such an item, it had to undergo some restoration to bring it back to life. The work was undertaken by a wood work restorer.

The work undertaken was as follows:

Washed, cleaned, oiled and waxed.

Bottom drawers were made as the old ones were missing and painted with pigments in the traditional way. Period floorboards were used to keep within the timeline also. The stretchers inside the carcass are original.

The ends only of the back legs were replaced as they had rotted away.

Historic worm treated.

This antique workbench with its drawers above, below and underneath shelf makes it, we think, a rather special one. The patina is exceptional. The craquelure to the top drawers forms part of its appeal. The naive tools holder in the small top shelf compartment is charming, and more so when you open and see it for the first time. We believe this bench may well have been scratch built and a one off.

This piece can take pride in any setting but its size is such that it can fit in most homes for that industrial look, small retail outlets and small work shops. A great statement peice which would work wonders for an interior design project too.
