PORTRAIT OF MAX JAFFA BY MARTIN BENSON
A collection of paintings by actor and artist Martin Benson (1918-2010).
Martin Benson was best known as an actor who appeared in many well-known films, such as Cleopatra, Goldfinger, The King and I, The Omen, and many more. In addition to his screen and TV career he also appeared on stage, including playing The King and the Kralahome in the original stage production of The King and I at Drury Lane Theatre, London. He was also a producer of films running his own production company.
As an artist he was known for painting many celebrities, held several exhibitions and exhibited at The Royal Academy of Art Summer Exhibition on several occasions. The artwork had been originally consigned by his daughter.
This portrait is of Max Jaffa OBE (1911-1991) who was a British light orchestral violinist and bandleader. He is best remebered as the leader of the Palm Court Orchestra and trio with Jack Byfield and Reginald Kilbey which broadcast on BBC Radio. His career lasted 70 years before retiring in 1990. He clearly played to the very end. An artist dedicated to the very end.
The portrait does justice to Max Jaffa. A very good likeness.
