This is an enormous paintng by Leon-Laurent Galand (French, 1872-1960) entitled ‘Les Trois Garçons’. A very well executed painting with such impact as to make it a genuine talking piece.
It is a full length portrait of an officer from the Spanish Royal Guard in uniform sitting before a bureau plat.
The painting is housed in a black painted wooden frame. The painting is signed Leon Galand and dated 1924 to the bottom right.
This painting Sold at Christie’s auction on the 5th of March 2014, for £8750. This exceeded their estimate of £2000 – £4000 as shown on the label to verso. We were fortunate to source this painting more recently.
The uniform of the sitter had been identified by Christies auction house as that of an officer of the Spanish Royal Guard.

Condition: Scuffs and marks to the frame. Small loses of paint particulary to left cheek and forehead. See close up photo and all photos.

BIOGRAPHY:
Léon Laurent Galand was a French painter and illustrator born April 18, 1872 in Montpellier (Hérault) and died November 4, 1960 in Clichy (Hauts-de-Seine). Léon Galand was a pupil of Ernest Michel, Robert Delaunay, Gustave Moreau, Fernand Cormon and Joseph Blanc. He exhibited at the Salon of French Artists in 1904 and obtained a gold medal and a 2nd Prix de Rome, an honorable mention in 1903 at the Salon of French Artists, a third class medal in 1909. He was decorated with the Legion of Honor in 1924. He also sent his works to the Winter Salon. He painted portraits, landscapes especially of Brittany and Provence, genre scenes and nudes.
