AFRICAN MAKONDE HELMET MASK

This is an original African Makonde helmet mask.
The mask dates from the 20th Century and is from Tanzania/Northern Mozambique. It is called ‘Lipiko’ in the native language of the Makonde. It is carved and patinated wood in the manner of a human face and decorated with hair.
The masks are used to celebrate the entry of boys and girls back into the village as adults.
Condition – Some cracks, holes and shrinkage.
